A Sand Key Beach Engagement Session
Jul 2 2026 | By: Nicholl Hyatt
Some engagement sessions are all about the location.
This wasn't one of them.
Abby and Jake chose the beach at Sand Key Beach in Clearwater, Florida, for their engagement session.
Don't get me wrong, Sand Key Beach in Clearwater gave us plenty to work with. The waves were rolling in, the sky eventually turned shades of pink and peach, and the Gulf gave us a beautiful backdrop for the evening.
But when I look back at Abby and Jake's engagement session, that's not what stands out most.
It's how much fun they had together.
From the moment we started shooting, these two were laughing. Not the polite "smile for the camera" kind of laughing. The genuine kind that happens when you're spending time with your favorite person. That energy followed us through the entire session and made photographing them incredibly easy.
Trusting the Process
One of my favorite things about Abby and Jake was how willing they were to trust me.
Every photographer eventually asks couples to do things that sound a little strange out loud.
Run down the beach?
Absolutely.
One more time because I have another idea?
Let's do it.
Twirl again?
Done.
Climb out onto the rocks?
Sure.
Stand in the surf while a wave sneaks up on you?
Why not.
They never hesitated. They never overthought it. They were completely up for whatever we suggested, which made the session so much fun.
The Secret Behind Natural-Looking Photos
One thing people don't always realize is that many of those candid-looking photos aren't captured on the first try.
Sometimes the best images happen on the second attempt. Or the third.
We'll try something, make a small adjustment, and try it again. Maybe the timing is better. Maybe the light changes. Maybe everyone is a little more relaxed because they've already done it once.
That's exactly what happened during Abby and Jake's session. I had them run down the beach more than once, asked for a few extra twirls, and revisited a few ideas throughout the evening.
Not because anything wasn't working, but because that's often where the magic happens.
The first attempt helps everyone loosen up. By the second or third time, people stop thinking about the camera altogether and start focusing on each other.
Cotton Candy Skies and Bare Feet in the Surf
The weather gave us one of my favorite kinds of beach evenings.
The sky stayed softly overcast for most of the session, which created beautiful light and helped keep everyone comfortable. As the evening went on, hints of pink and peach started showing up across the horizon until we eventually ended up with the prettiest cotton candy skies over the Gulf.
Of course, Abby and Jake were more than willing to take advantage of every part of the beach. They climbed on the rocks, stood in the surf, and embraced every suggestion I threw their way.
Because they were so focused on enjoying the experience instead of worrying about the camera, the photos feel exactly like them.
Looking Ahead to the Wedding Day
Looking through their gallery now, I'm reminded that the beach was almost an afterthought.
Yes, the cotton candy skies were beautiful and the beach at Sand Key Beach gave us plenty of gorgeous scenery, but that's not what makes these photos memorable.
What stands out is how much fun Abby and Jake had together. Every time I asked them to do something that sounded slightly ridiculous, they laughed and went for it. They trusted the process, embraced every idea, and somehow made running back and forth across a beach look effortless.
And honestly, I think that's exactly why these photos feel so much like them.
Abby and Jake, thank you for trusting me, climbing on rocks, standing in the surf, and running up and down the beach more times than either of us can count. I can't wait to celebrate with you on your wedding day!
